Functional Office Plant Design -- Positioning 101
When designing an office plantscape, it is important to determine what the function of each space is. How can plants be used to improve workplace functionality?
Three Quick Pro Tips:
1) Hallways: The best way to get people moving along a hallway is to place plants of a similar species together in a row. The landscape naturally presents as a prairie or frontier. Visually, this invites us to move alongside the rows, but not to linger. Everything is in it’s place and no need to muse. Think of plants in an airport terminal—-there is a reason why all the containers and species are the same along the walkways. It keeps us moving!
2) Noise Absorption: A buzzing office environment distracts and increases stress levels for employees. By placing a live plant in between cubicles, you are effectively reducing noise by promoting a quieter atmosphere. Live plants are natural sound barriers because they absorb noise.
3) Gathering Spaces: Plants are great conversation starters for an office environment. We spend most of our days indoors and a spark of green can rejuvenate and energize us. Placing plants of different species together in common areas like the cafeteria or break room invites people to linger and remain longer in a space than plants of a similar species. There is more to visually absorb and digest.
